Player Guide for my upcoming B/X campaign

I used B/X as a basis but wanted to build on it in some mechanical and non-mechanical ways to make it a game unique to my table. I’ve added boons and banes to be rolled randomly prior to choosing class, skill (or more aptly personality quirks) that have no or little mechanical value, a renown/infamy system that is affected by player’s decisions and bardic storytelling.
There is also a battle scar system that isn’t fully outlined in the player guide but is in my referee notes. The battle scars can have an affect on player characters physically and/or psychologically.
These systems will be play tested and altered or removed over time as we as a group decide what we like.
I tried tobtake things I like from DCC, the Arduin Grimoire and other systems and rework them for B/X. B/X is a nice system for this because it is so hard to break, so trying out new things with it keeps it together while also being able to manipulate it.

Minor nosebleed; caster takes 1d4 damage.

How much HP do your casters have? That nosebleed could be fatal at low levels! :smiling_face_with_horns:

Nice tables, very usable.
I’m interested in how the spell casting changes will work in play, looking to create a class with a similar system.
The renown/infamy table is quite interesting, I might make something similar as a base for a paladin/knight type class.
Arduin Grimoire is something I wanted to take a look at as well, to see if I can use anything from it.

They get their standard HD. They just need to make informed choices when casting spells. Magic isn’t a toy.

The Arduin Grimoire has some interesting ideas. A lot of tables. I’d be interested in trying to play a session or 2 of it just to see hiw it runs.

Yeah, lots of mineable ideas for sure. I wonder if there are any play reports of groups playing through some of the more antiquated or lesser known systems out there.

You should check put Sir Pelinore’s Favorite Game on drivethru. It was originally published around 1975 or 6 I think. It has some interesting ideas in it as well as some simple mass combat rules.

Sounds interesting, I’ll take a look.
